HVAC Mechanics

JOB DESCRIPTION

What You’ll Do:
As an HVAC Mechanic, you’ll install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout the university. You’ll make sure all systems run efficiently, meet safety and environmental standards, and support energy savings through the building automation system (BAS).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install and fix HVAC equipment like chillers, boilers, air handlers, and fume hoods

  • Troubleshoot problems like leaks or system failures

  • Perform routine maintenance (e.g., change filters, belts, motors)

  • Calibrate thermostats and control systems for efficiency

  • Follow EPA rules for refrigerant use and disposal

  • Keep records of work done, including inspections and repairs

  • Respond quickly to maintenance requests and emergencies

  • Work with other maintenance staff (electricians, plumbers, etc.)

  • Train or guide junior team members as needed

  • Use CMMS (work order system) and basic Microsoft Office tools

  • Safely lift up to 50 lbs., use ladders, and work in tight spaces

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Class B HVAC license

  • EPA Section 608 Certification (Type I, II, or Universal)

  • Valid driver’s license

  • At least 5 years of hands-on HVAC experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HVAC-related technical certification or associate degree

  • Additional certifications (e.g., NATE, Class A HVAC License)

Other Expectations:

  • Must show up reliably and work well with others

  • Able to work independently or on a team

  • Able to read blueprints and technical manuals
